Week 4 - Now All Natural

Candle Update

I ordered some natural fragrance oils in various fall scents and they smell so good. I made just one little candle with an apple scent, but based on the formula I have been using, I needed to use the whole tiny bottle in one candle, so that is disappointing. And not cheap. So we will see how it turns out when I can light it. I wanted to test out more scents, but I forgot to save my cans from cooking this week, so I didn't have any. I will make sure to save my cans this week though!

Also, I did light last week's citrus candle and it wasn't the best. The candle has a decent smell cold, but when lit there wasn't much. I'll have to keep trying it, maybe there were too many smells in the apartment at once.

Space and Place

In The Meaning of Everyday Occupation (Hasselkus and Dickie, 2021) we learned about how a space becomes a place when there are experiences and memories in that space. In my experience, the homes that I live go through this process. My apartment during my undergrad, the campus, the city, certain parks and hiking trails, all filled with memories became a special place to me. Now I live in a new city and a new apartment and I had to readjust to the experience of being somewhere new. While my apartment is becoming more of a place for me, the rest of the city is still a confusing and meaningless space.

My new occupation of candle making doesn't involve much space or place on it's own, but it has contributed to my apartment being more of a place. I make my candles in the kitchen, so now I have that association. I'm hoping that once I make a candle that smells really good, each time I light it will help my apartment feel more like home and I will associate that scent with this place and with the memories of making the candle.
