Blog 9 What else can I candle?
This week I tried scenting a candle in a new way. So far I have only used fragrance oils, but I came across ways to use ground spices. So my candle has vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. We will see how it goes. The wax was an ugly brown color when it was still warm, and then when it cooled the cinnamon had separated to the top and bottom.
I think candle making falls between options F and G, which are enjoyment and interest. Enjoyment is the cross between high meaning and low-level engagement. Interest is the cross between high meaning and high-level engagement. I chose both of them because I think the level of engagement varies depending on what part of the candle-making process I am in. I also chose both because I don't completely agree with the way they are defined. I feel like I experience enjoyment and interest in different ways during high and low levels of engagement. So I don't like the idea of separating them.
With how busy I get during school, it is not so often that I am truly bored. Having a new occupation will provide another option for something to do when I become bored. When I was younger I experienced boredom when I wasn't doing anything. I think the way I am most often bored now is when I have been doing the same activity for a long time. This applies to school work, where I can be engaged for some time, but then I need a break to engage in a different activity. I have enjoyed having candle making as a break from homework and studying.
Hi Sarah! I am so excited to read through your blog- I love candles so much. I thought about candle making as my occupation and now I am a little sad I didn't choose it. I think it is so fun that you have started experimenting with adding spices into your candles. Have you burned this candle yet and if so, how did it smell? I also chose that my occupation provided high-meaning and it was interested reading about how your occupation provided both low-level and high-level engagement. This makes sense when I think about all the different steps and processes that certain occupations entail, like candle making. I also feel like I have experienced very little boredom since starting school. You mentioned that when you were younger, you experienced boredom when you weren't doing anything which definitely makes sense. When you were younger, do you feel like you chose healthy/meaningful occupations to fill your time when boredom struck? If not, do you feel like you have learned to do so now? Great post, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah! I think candle making would be a really enjoyable occupation to engage in. Amber used to have an almost unhealthy obsession candles last winter, so we have a large collection of them still. While I don't necessarily love them as much as other people may, I will say having a clean house with a nice smelling candle is a really nice feeling! When it comes to the chart, would you say candle making is only in between enjoyment and interest, or can it fluctuate between other levels as well? I know running for me tends to stay within the interest level, but it can drop lower depending upon how physically demanding the run is. I also understand what you mean with not being bored all that often anymore because of school, and that sometimes the school work can be boring when we do it for too long. Is there generally something you find yourself doing when you've been doing schoolwork for too long?
